With the twin Palm Island projects well underway, the Nakheel Corporation unveiled yesterday May 06 plans to construct yet another offshore island development off the coast of Dubai. The latest venture, called ‘The World’ will comprise 200 islands positioned in the shape of a world map. It was conceived by HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum.

“The ‘World’ is set to be the most exclusive and private water retreat available in Dubai. It will provide an intriguing and one of a kind haven for investors looking for exclusive and world-class real estate opportunity,” said Sultan Ahmed bin Sulayem, executive chairman, Nakheel.

The development will be placed five kilometres off Dubai’s coastline, covering 5.5 kilometres in length and width, 60 million square feet, and including ten million square feet of beach.

The islands will vary in size, depending on the area they represent, while also reflecting similarities specific to those regions. In what appears to be a move to appease environmentalists and maximise the islands tranquillity, Nakheel claim that restrictions have been placed on the height of the developments.

Construction of the islands is expected to begin in late 2003 with total completion forecast for 2008.

According to the Dubai Department of Tourism and Commerce Marketing, the number of visitors to the emirate will reach 10 million by 2007, with a further 30 million visitors by 2015. The development is expected to cater specifically to the elite residential and tourist market.
