Waagner Biro scores floating Creek bridge

Austrian contractor Waagner Biro Gulf has won the US $42 million (AED155 million) contract to build a floating bridge over Dubai Creek.

A source close to the project has confirmed that construction is currently being mobilised and work is expected to begin this month.

Dubai-based Khansaheb Civil Engineering is also believed to have bid for the project.

Construction of the three-lane bridge, which will be built half a kilometre to the south of Al Maktoum Bridge, will take 10 months.

When completed, it will connect the intersection near Deira City Centre and Dubai Creek Golf and Yacht Club, and will end at the intersection to be built on Riyadh Street between the Dubai Courts and Creek Park.

An additional track between Khalid Bin Al Waleed Road and Oud Metha Road from one side, and Al Ittihad Road and Deira from the other, will also be provided.

It will be built out of hollow concrete blocks, each 6m wide and 20m long, which will float on the water’s surface.

The bridge, which is part of the Dubai Roads and Transport Authority’s strategy to ease traffic congestion in the emirate, will accommodate an estimated 3,000 vehicles in each direction during peak morning and evening hours.

“The bridge will open and close in 20 minutes,” said Mattar Al Tayer, chairman of the board and executive director, RTA.

“The opening and closing times of the bridge will be coordinated with shipment companies and Abras to facilitate and organise the movement of ships and vessels in Dubai Creek.”

The project is expected to reduce congestion on Al Maktoum Bridge by around 37%.

Waagner Biro Gulf has worked on several projects since it began operating in the region in the 1960s.

Among them are Abu Dhabi’s Al Maqta, Al Sawah and the Al Raha Beach Resort bridges, as well as Dubai’s Al Maktoum, Al Garhoud and Karama-Deira bridges.
