Burj Dubai set to get all clad up

by Angela Giuffrida on Tuesday, 27 March 2007

Cladding for Emaar Properties' Burj Dubai is due to arrive in the UAE from China in May.

The cladding has been made by China's Far East Aluminium Works Company and installation is expected to begin early in June.

The work is being undertaken in conjunction with Arabian Aluminium Company.

"The cladding will be in Dubai in May," Greg Sang, assistant director of projects, Emaar Properties, told Construction Week.

"There's some preliminary work to be done. We'll probably hang the first panel in early June."

Cladding work on the tower - set to be the world's tallest - has been delayed for almost a year after the originally appointed contractor, Schmidlin Façade Technology, was replaced after going bankrupt.

Despite the delays, Emaar has said that the tower is on schedule to be completed by the fourth quarter of 2008.

The Burj Dubai's exact height has yet to be publicly revealed. Emaar has said that the tower will have at least 160 storeys.

The main contractor on the project is a joint venture of Samsung, Besix and Arabtec.

The tower was designed by US-based Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM).
