Qatar's Energy City goes 'green'
by Safura Rahimi on Wednesday, 11 April 2007
The Gulf's first hydrocarbon industry business centre is set to become more eco friendly by acquiring new energy-saving services, it was announced today.
Energy City Qatar will receive tailor-made ‘green' services from Energy Management Services (EMS) - the Middle East's leading energy management company - in a step that is predicted to make it one of the Mideast's most viable environmentally-sound business centres.
"The ‘green' strategies give tenants and developers numerous environmental, social and economic benefits... [They] minimise the strain on the local infrastructure by improving air and water quality, reducing waste streams, conserving natural resources and promoting energy efficiency," said Khaled Bushnaq, managing director of EMS.
"On average EMS projects attain 20% to 40% reduction in electricity charges," he added.
The company predicts developers will achieve a return on investment anywhere from 70% to 150%, giving them increased profitability, operational productivity, equipment efficiency and reduced energy and water consumption.
"The buzzword now in popular architecture is the 'green building' concept, which is simply building structures that have minimal impact on the environment. Energy City Qatar is an excellent example of this concept and for other developers to emulate," Bushnaq said.
