Cyber security squad set up for Emirates

by ArabianBusiness.com staff writer  on Thursday, 12 April 2007

The UAE regulatory authority is aiming to tackle the rise of cybercrime in the Middle East by forming a specialist security response team.

The Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA) last week announced plans to establish a cyber security coordination centre in a bid to "facilitate the detection, prevention and response of cyber security incidents on the internet".

Dubbed the United Arab Emirates Computer Emergency Response Team (aeCERT), the unit will consist of ten people initially and will work on areas including awareness campaigns and providing information on new attacks, Mohammed Gheyath, manager of technical affairs at the TRA, told IT Weekly.

Gheyath said the unit had been set up because of the increased internet dependency in the region.

"The amount of dependency on information security is very high in this region now and is growing and we thought there was a need for dedicated, specialised people who will be looking after the security of information and systems used in the industry," he said.

Gheyath said there was already a similar initiative in place in Qatar, and other countries in the region were also considering similar moves.
