Former UN chief set for Mideast return

by Andrew Mernin on Sunday, 15 April 2007

Following his visit to the UAE last year, former UN secretary general Kofi Annan will return to the region this November as he attends the Arabian Business-sponsored Leaders in Dubai Forum 2007.

The Nobel Peace Prize winner will discuss the influence of diplomacy on corporate leadership and social responsibility in the Middle East at the event, which takes place between November 18 and 20.

"Annan's address is very timely as bilateral diplomacy is an integral component in the success of commercial globalisation," said Alan Kelly, event director of IIR - the organisers of the forum.

"Today there is an increasingly urgent need for businesses and governments, particularly those in the Middle East and China, to forge effective and beneficial corporate diplomacy programmes," he added.

A lifelong bureaucrat, Annan is praised for his leadership and proficiency in reforming the UN, overseeing peacekeeping operations and forging partnerships with the world business community. During his two terms as secretary general from 1997 through 2006, Annan was also commended by fellow diplomats for steadfastly confronting the tough issues of the Middle East, Iraq and Libya.

Look out for an exclusive Arabian Business interview with Kofi Annan later this year.
