Lufthansa announces India maintenance facility
by David Ingham on Tuesday, 17 April 2007
Lufthansa Technik has set up an aeroplane maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) facility at Shamshabad, site of the forthcoming Hyderabad international airport.
Lufthansa Technik, which claims to be the first international MRO provider to set up shop in India, has partnered with India's GMR Group to set up the facility. The German company will be the major partner with more than 75% of the venture.
"We see this venture as the foundation for a long-lasting partnership, and the basis for a state-of-the-art technical co-operation for the benefit of our existing and future airline partners in India," said August W Henningsen, chairman of the executive board at Lufthansa Technik AG.
"With more than 400 planes on order, the Indian aviation market is one of the fastest growing in the world. The new facility will complement the existing MRO support being provided to new as well as existing fleets in India and ensures an optimal MRO support within the country."
The facility will provide maintenance services (including C- and D-checks) for the Airbus A320 family and Boeing 737 aircraft. Operations are scheduled to start at the end of 2008 with two parallel maintenance lines. Around US $20 million is expected to be spent on construction and equipping the 20,000m2 workshop.
Around 400 people are expected to be employed at the facility. Lufthansa Technical Training is in talks with technical institutes in and around Hyderabad aimed at establishing relevant training programmes.
