Dubai bridge projects near completion

by Staff reporter on Tuesday, 17 April 2007
The shape of Dubai Creek and its crossings has changed dramatically in the past year.

The largest bridge in the UAE will be fully operational from the beginning of May when the Business Bay Crossing will increase its capacity from four lanes to 13.

The bridge, which connects Dubai's emerging Business Bay financial district to Festival City and then on towards the northern emirates, should ease congestion on Garhoud Bridge, which is currently being rebuilt as a toll crossing for the Creek.

Board Chairman and Exectutive Officer for Dubai's Road Traffic Authority (RTA), Mattar Al Tayer, toured road and bridge projects in the city yesterday including the floating bridge being built 500 metres south of Maktoum Bridge, and the massive new Garhoud Bridge.

The floating bridge, as reported exclusively by Arabianbusiness.com, will be open in July.

Garhoud Bridge project, which is 55 percent complete, will consist of six lanes in each direction and will be the entry point for Dubai's first "congestion zone". Drivers crossing the bridge will have to pay a toll of Dhs4. See related story.
