Emirates Golf Course, Majilis

by ArabianBusiness.com staff writer on Sunday, 01 April 2007

Dubbed ‘the desert miracle' when first opened back in 1988, Emirates Golf Club was originally built as an attraction to Dubai's growing corporate sector and burgeoning tourist industry. Designed by Florida-based architect Karl Litten, the course has, over the years, established itself on the world golf stage. The club initially gained international recognition in 1989 with its first European tour Event - the Dubai Desert Classic. Today the tournament, with a glitterati of golf stars like Tiger Woods and Ernie Els, is beamed into the homes of millions across the globe. And the course has fast become one of the best looking and best playing facilities on the European Tour. And the beauty of this course is that it has been specifically designed to cater for both the planet's greatest golfers and your everyday 18-handicapper. In order to keep up with the demands of the world's golfing masters, the course has been finely tuned in recent months. Hole 15 and 18 have been lengthened to give the European Tour a 200-yard par 3.

The fairways have also been pinched to on a number of holes, with six holes being tightened. I found the most challenging hole to be number 6 - a difficult dogleg right making it imperative to find the fairway off the tee if you are to stand any chance of attacking the pin. With a bunker to the front and right of the green, the flag is often tucked behind it. Perhaps the most memorable hole was number 8, offering spectacular views of Dubai Marina. And of course, 18th hole - that has seen its fair share of drama - is the ideal vehicle for budding Tigers to test their golf skills to the limit. The T has been pushed back around 14 yards to make it almost impossible for the long hitters to cut the corner with a big draw. In all the EGC with its idyllic setting and challenging terrain is ideal for both the seasoned expert and the beginner looking to escape the Dubai traffic and wile a away a few precious hours out of the office.
