Construction fires the result of corner-cutting

by ArabianBusiness.com staff writer  on Saturday, 19 May 2007

Recent fires that have occurred in buildings under construction in the Middle East are a result of contractors cutting corners according to an official from the International Fire Consultants Certification (IFC).

Speaking at a passive fire seminar held in the UAE, Jerry Quale, IFC director of certification, said that fires are a symptom of all developing economies. "The downside of rapidly developing economies is that in the rush for development, corners are cut. People want maximum construction speed at minimum costs for increased profits, and as a result disaster can occur," he commented.

Proper training and a greater awareness of the causes of fire is needed he claimed. "You never see fires occurring in the petrochemical industry because staff are trained to be aware and safety is of utmost importance. The same should also apply when constructing buildings. It is human beings that cause fires and if we can control them then we can control the fires," he added.
