LNG plans blocked after celebrity emissions protest
by ArabianBusiness.com staff writer on Saturday, 26 May 2007
California governor Arnold Schwarzenegger has vetoed the construction of a US $800 million liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal. Global mining giant BHP Billiton Ltd had planned to build the 14-storey, 295m-long LNG terminal 22.25 km off the coast of Los Angeles. But the project was vetoed after opposition from Hollywood celebrities including Pierce Brosnan, Martin Sheen, Tom Hanks and Cindy Crawford. Although California is desperate for LNG, opponents said the proposal would generate enormous amounts of greenhouse gas emissions. Schwarzenegger ruled that BHP Billiton's proposal was environmentally unsound.
