DSC plans huge shopping zones

by Dylan Bowman on Monday, 04 June 2007

The $3 billion Dubai Sports City (DSC) development on Monday revealed plans to open more than 1.7 million square feet of retail space by 2009.

The shopping area will be divided in three retail sectors within DSC: Arena Mall, North Point and South Point.

Arena Mall, the largest retail sector, will offer around 1.4 million square feet of retail space over two floors, accommodating some 230 shops.

It will also include a range of restaurants, a cinema complex and an entertainment zone.

The mall will be located close to the development’s planned sporting facilities, such as the 60,000 capacity outdoor stadium, 10,000 seat indoor arena, and 25,000 capacity cricket stadium.

“To further ensure high and sustained footfall, the Arena Mall occupies an optimal location within Dubai Sports City, in close proximity to the cricket stadium and the multi-purpose outdoor stadium and directly linked to the 10,000 multi-purpose indoor arena,” said Khalid Al Zarooni, president of DSC.

Retail leasing has now commenced for both the Arena Mall and North Point.

All three shopping areas are expected to open by the third quarter of 2009.

In April a joint venture of UAE construction firm Arabtec and German engineering firm Max Bögl won an AED 830 million ($226.15 million) contract to build Dubai Sports City’s 10,000-seat indoor arena and 60,000-seat outdoor stadium.

Both stadiums are also set for completion in 2009.
