Western Digital’s (WD) newly redesigned WD Passport Portable drives, which have grown in storage capacity while shrinking in physical size, are now shipping.

Featuring a stylish, ultra-portable design and sleek, piano-black finish, WD Passport is available in capacities of 60, 80, 120 and 160 GB, and weighs less than 5oz. WD Passport simplifies the synchronisation of essential personal files and Microsoft Outlook data on a PC making it easy for consumers to take desktop content with them, the firm claims. WD Sync software enables users to securely access, edit and share Microsoft Word documents and Exce spreadsheets, MP3 files, e-mails, attachments. Should users misplace the Passport, the data is protected with 128-bit encryption. Google software on the drive allows users to easily locate files with Google Desktop Search, manage photos with Picasa photo organiser software and simplify web searches with the Google Toolbar search bar.

HIGH-QUALITY DESIGNS

Epson has launched its new all-in-one, the Stylus CX4900 Series in the Middle East. The printer, part of its latest range of Stylus CX Series multi-function devices, is a cost-efficient all-in-one, which incorporates fast printing and copying speeds to deliver high-quality printing, scanning and copying capabilities for the home, the company claims.

Featuring Epson’s unique micro piezo technology and DURABrite Ultra ink, the Stylus CX4900 Series offers a print resolution of up to 5760x1440dpi and laser-like print quality output that is highly durable and is smudge, fade and water resistant on either plain or photo paper. Four cost-effective individual ink cartridges ensure efficiency and savings as the user needs to replace only the colour that is used.

DURABrite Ultra, which the Stylus CX4900 Series incorporates, has been specially formulated to give outstanding results for everyday printing on plain paper and great looking photos on glossy photo paper, Epson claims.FAST-WORKING MFP

Xerox Middle East and Africa (MEA) is introducing its Xerox WorkCentre 4150, which it claims is its fastest-ever desktop multifunction system. The multifunction printer offers copying, scanning and faxing capabilities to help business, Xerox said.

The WorkCentre 4150 black-and-white multifunction printer is available in flexible configurations, from a basic copy-only version to an advanced version that prints, copies, scans and faxes. It is the only product in its class to offer automatic two-sided printing on all configurations, the firm claims.

It enables people to print, copy, colour scan and fax at the same time without waiting for a prior job to finish. Features include Print Queue Management and Automatic Print Around, which lets people move important jobs to the front of the queue and eliminate “traffic jams” by immediately bypassing jobs in the queue that need special types or sizes of paper. These capabilities help maximise productivity within busy enterprise workgroups.

COMPACT AND LIGHT

Acer has announced the new compact Veriton 1000 release to tie in with the forthcoming GITEX event. It features eight USB ports, notebook adaptor, and built in Intel vPro technology that allows IT staff to perform critical support and maintenance from a remote location.

The Veriton 1000 CPU is actually 90% smaller and 75 % lighter than the typical ‘tower’ desktops, the firm claims.

As well as drastically reducing the amount of space needed in the office or workplace, it also boasts up to 40% greater processing power than previous generation CPUs while using up to 40% less energy, Acer says.

There is ample storage space (3Gb/s hard disk) and marked increases in retrieval speeds, the company claims.

To coincide with GITEX 2006, the compact Veriton 1000 desktop will be made available at exclusive prices only during the week of GITEX and GITEX Computer Shopper 2006.

QUIET PERFORMER

Xerox has announced its most affordable desktop colour laser printer designed to replace business ink-jet printers. The Xerox Phaser 6110 colour laser printer prints up to four pages per minute (ppm) in colour and 16 (A4) ppm in black and white at a print resolution of 2400x600dpi. The Phaser 6110 has high-quality colour laser printing and small footprint, and it is lightweight and quiet, the firm claims. With several advanced features such as booklet printing, poster creation and manual-duplex printing, it also provides flexibility for businesses to create everything from sales proposals and presentations to promotional brochures. The Phaser 6110 comes in two models: a direct-connect printer or a network-ready printer.

Both configurations use a fan-free technology making them quiet and non-disruptive in office settings where printers may be in close proximity to workers.

The printers have a highly compact design and weigh 30 pounds, making them the smallest and lightest printers in this class, Xerox said.

It is easy to set up with a four-click driver installation, helping businesses get up and printing in a matter of minutes. Replacing toner also is a snap thanks to simple front-panel access.
