AMG lends a hand to Special Olympics

by ArabianBusiness.com staff writer on Sunday, 12 November 2006

The Arab Media Group was among only a handful of organisations to escape criticism from the organisers of the 5th Special Olympics MENA.

The regional event, which began in the UAE yesterday and features 1000 athletes from 20 countries, relies heavily on funding from private companies. But at a press conference at Dubai Press Club last week, organiser Juma Thani said he was shocked by the reaction of private companies. "We were totally ignored," he said. "We would like to say that, no matter what their excuses, they should have had some moral responsibility."

The event, which is being held in the UAE for the first time and runs until Wednesday, was effectively rescued by a five million dirham donation from Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum.

AMG, which publishes Emirates Today and Emarat Al Youm, provided free advertising space to help publicise the event, while Dubai TV and TEN Sports are covering the competition.

The PR and advertising brief for the event is being run by ad agency D-Seven.
