Huawei’s SmartAX solution for fixed access networks

by ArabianBusiness.com staff writer  on Friday, 27 October 2006

Huawei Technologies has launched its Terabit Sma-rtAX optical fibre access (FTTx) solution.

With the popularity of broadband access services and the launch of high-bandwidth services such as video on-demand, internet games and internet protocoI television (IPTV), optical fibre access is seen as representing the future of fixed access networks, according to the company.

The Huawei Terabit FTTx solution is a high-bandwidth optical fibre solution that supports Gigabit passive optical network (GPON) and very-high-bit-rate digital subscriber line 2 (VDSL2) — an access technology that can work on existing infrastructure of copper wires — to deliver flexible services.

“Huawei’s access network has been operating over 100 million subscriber lines around the world up to the end of April 2006,” said Wang Jiading, vice president, Huawei Technologies Middle East and North Africa (MENA) operations.

“Huawei is consistently investing in access network applications and, to date, it has an R&D team of over 1,500 employees focused on this segment. This allows us to respond quickly to customers’ needs.”

The company said the solution, based on the 10GE architecture, would help telecom vendors upgrade their existing networks smoothly from GE to 10GE platform.

It will substantially reduce operating expenditure for telecom operators as it features excellent scalability, robust IP features and the capability to fulfil the future demands of ultra-high bandwidth, Huawei claimed.
