Sheikh Waleed Al Ibrahim, chairman and chief executive of MBC Group, has been named Arab Media Luminary of 2006.
He received the rarely designated honour from Amr Mousa, the secretary general of the Arab League, at a ceremony in Cairo.
The Arab Media Luminary award is dedicated to an individual who has made a significant contribution to the welfare of society.
Sheikh Waleed was recognised for becoming the first Arab businessman to establish a private Arab satellite TV channel. His empire now includes movie channel MBC2 and Western entertainment station MBC4.
The award committee gave special mention to MBC's Al Arabiya news channel.
He is only the third person to receive the award in its 10-year history. Other Arab Media Luminaries include the Nobel Prize winning author Nagib Mahfouz.
