3M strikes deal to join Kuwait’s National Guard

Cabling firm 3M has signed a string of lucrative deals in Kuwait — including projects with the Kuwait National Guard, the American University of Kuwait and the country’s newly-built Jaber Al-Ahmed International Stadium.

For the Kuwait National Guard, the firm is to install structured copper and fibre cabling to carry voice and data traffic on a newly-constructed site that will be made up of six buildings. This is being constructed as a joint venture between the Kuwait National Guard and defence contractor Lockheed Martin.

Due to the high security requirements of the project, 3M was contracted to provide cabl- ing for three separate networks on the site. “These cables will provide the infrastructure for them to connect their computers and their telephones to the internet, to communicate with each other and the offices outside the country and to give them access to the internet or to their VPNs [virtual private networks],” said Amer Hamed, technical sales engineer, for the 3M Kuwait office.

“They need to transfer information and files between the offices inside the site and to replicate it in their headquarters outside Kuwait, in the US or Europe. They need to have a complete infrastructure to communicate and to exchange information between them.”

Hamed went on to explain that the organisations had chosen fibre cables to carry their data traffic as this provides added security and restricts the possibilities for outside ‘tapping” of the network. “That’s why they are using the fibre —for the high security point,” he said.

“It will also give them higher bandwidth options which they will require for some applications,” Hamed added.

3M expects to complete the project by the end of the year.

Hamed explained that this has been a challenging project because of the strict specifications of the Kuwait National Guard and Lockheed Martin.

“It is a challenging project because there are a lot of specifications and requirements that are very demanding for the bandwidth and for the security. They have a very strict specification to assure high quality and we could meet these requirements — that’s why we were awarded this project,” he claimed.
