Indian skills crisis
by ArabianBusiness.com staff writer on Friday, 27 October 2006
India is facing a shortage of skilled IT professionals according to a study commissioned by the country’s National Association of Software and Service Companies (Nasscom).
Despite the country producing around 40,000 engineers a year, the study found only one in four engineers graduated to be employable, with the rest not up to the standards required in technical skill, English proficiency or ability to work in a team.
Nasscom has forecast a shortage of 500,000 professional employees in the technology sector by 2010, which does not bode well for some of India’s biggest IT and business process outsourcing providers, many of which have recently announced plans to massively expand their workforces.
Tata Consultancy Services, for example, said it is to add 30,000 to its current 72,000 workforce.
