ExxonMobil’s Al Khaleej Gas phase two (AKG-2) project development is to be launched following the successful completion of the initial stage, AKG-1, which started in November 2005. The move was announced by ExxonMobil Middle East Gas Marketing, part of Exxon Mobil Corporation, the State of Qatar and Qatar Petroleum.
“The launching of AKG-2 reflects another major achievement towards meeting the increased domestic demand for natural gas and represents another important step under the ambitious vision of His Highness the Emir, Sheikh Hamad Bin Khalifa Al-Thani, that aims to ensure the optimal utilisation of the country’s hydrocarbon resources,” said Abdullah bin Hamad Al-Attiyah, Minister for Energy and Industry.
When AKG-2 becomes operational in 2009, it is planned to have a production of 1580 million cubic feet per day (mcfd) of North Field natural gas. This will be processed to sales gas for the domestic markets in Qatar, while associated condensate and natural gas liquids will also be recovered. AKG-2 will be expected to produce about 1250mcfd of sales gas annually, about 15 million barrels of field condensate, about one million tonnes of natural gas liquids and an estimated 870 000 tonnes a year of ethane for use as petrochemical feedstock. The total investment for AKG-2 is expected to be more than US $3 billion.
“ExxonMobil is extremely proud of our partnership with Qatar Petroleum. We appreciate the confidence and trust placed in ExxonMobil to supply domestic gas demand. We extend our thanks to all parties involved in the conclusion of this major milestone,” said Mike Fry, vice president, ExxonMobil Development Company,
Al Khaleej Gas is being developed alongside the Ras Laffan phase three LNG expansion project to provide extra gas for export to the Ras Laffan Liquefied Natural Gas Company. Deliveries from Ras Laffan III are targeted principally for the US gas market. Also included in the development are large LNG ships that are expected to realise significant benefits from large economies. Ras Laffan III will involve the construction of offshore and onshore facilities, including two wellhead platforms, and gas treatment and liquid recovery facilities.
