Wireless HD mooted

Industry giants LG Electronics, Panasonic, Sony, Samsung and Toshiba, have established a new industry body charged with developing a specification for a wireless high definition digital interface.

The group, known as WirelessHD, will actively promote the new format, which is expected to be available for adoption as soon as the specifications are completed next Spring.

The development spells good news for the consumer electronics industry, which has been frustrated by the lack of progression in terms of the development of wireless HD protocols. The technology should have a huge impact on consumer demand for smart home applications and wireless HD receivers.

Market analyst In-Stat predicted that global sales of devices featuring high-speed digital AV interfaces would grow from 60 million units in 2006 to 495 million units by 2009.

“Wireless HD will provide consumers wireless flexibility and ease of use while preserving the benefits traditionally associated with popular wired alternatives for point-to-point display, such as HDMI and DVI,” said Brian O’Rourke, a senior analyst with In-Stat/MDR. 

“The data rates (or bandwidth) that WirelessHD will support are truly impressive.” 

WirelessHD, which intends to specify the unlicensed, globally available 60 GHz frequency band, will enable wireless uncompressed high definition, high-quality video and data transmission.

The organisation intends to incorporate the technology in a wide range of audiovisual devices.
