Motorola has scored its second success with a GSM operator in the Middle East this year.

The company has been awarded a contract worth $23 million for the expansion of the Fastlink GSM mobile network in Jordan; a deal that comes hot on the heals of a similar expansion deal worth $28 million in Kuwait.

The Fastlink network has been in commercial service for five years, and has 100 per cent network infrastructure supplied by Motorola's Global Telecom Solutions Sector (GTSS). This latest contract is for multilayer GSM network expansion, utilising Motorola's Horizonsystems GSM network solution, which is optimised for high quality wide area and focused high capacity coverage.

Once the work is completed the Fastlink network will have the capacity to handle over a quarter of a million subscribers, providing enhanced coverage in advance of the expected demand for the new mobile data services.

Basem Rousan, CTO and Director of Engineering at Fastlink said: "Fastlink was the first GSM network in Jordan, and through our commitment to quality we have gained the confidence of a market enjoying spectacular growth. This new expansion takes us into the new century with a network designed to match and manage that growth."

Jeff Cherif, regional general manager for Motorola's GTSS, said: "Motorola and Fastlink have maintained an excellent working relationship, and we continue to be committed to providing Fastlink with the best support, service, and technology. This latest contract will strengthen and enhance the services of the Fastlink network."

Fastlink's announcement steals back some of the public relations ground it has lost to Mobilecom, which launched its GSM network last month in Jordan.

The two companies are now competing to meet the demands of current customers, while aggressively expanding their services in a battle that has come to epitomise the benefits of a deregulated telco industry in the Middle East.
