Palaces on wheels... the top 10 luxury cars

by Shahzad Sheikh on Wednesday, 20 June 2007

A union between old and new, Rolls-Royce's Phantom hands down takes our luxury list top spot, says Shahzad Sheikh, editor of Car Middle East.

While even the Americans are beginning to go green and shy away from ostentatious overkill when it comes to their automobiles - witness Hollywood stars trading in Caddys and Bentleys for frugal little Toyota hybrids - the Middle East remains possibly the last bastion of the super luxury car. Money no object, taste no obstacle, just wish it and it will be yours, and guilty conscience be damned.

Pimp My Ride fame is about to open its first facility outside of the North America, right here in Dubai. Popularly known for reviving dead and unloved cars, the company's real business revolves around extreme high-end cosmetic conversions and customisations.

For wealthy petrol heads only the best will do, and ‘the best car in the world' was and still remains the Rolls Royce. Unveiled in January 2003 as the first new Roller developed and produced under BMW ownership, the Phantom was an all-out effort to reclaim that title.

Heeding founder, Sir Henry Royce's philosophy, ‘strive for perfection in everything you do', the hedonistic goliath from Goodwood ticks all the checkboxes for cars in this rarefied segment: opulence beyond reason, heavenly comfort, an unlimited price tag and majestic road presence. Plus it helps to have a heritage steeped in myth, romance, magnificence and of course royal patronage.

Driving it is to experience a serenity of motion that borders on surreal. Its effortlessness and latent puissance appeal to the basest of instincts: sloth and lust. And despite its $400,000 starting price we obviously can't get enough of them - with Dubai being the fourth biggest market worldwide for Rolls Royce. The Middle East also claims one of the highest number of requests for bespoke and Coachbuilt Phantoms anywhere.

For its awesome ability to astound, intimidate and caress all in one package, the thoroughly aristocratic Phantom is unmatched as the ultimate luxury car.

Many of the selections in the various categories of top cars, such as luxury sedans, sports cars, SUVs, and the most expensive autos are the same vehicles I wrote about on JustLuxe.com.

I am going to review this publication more often.

Nice job
