Liebherr and Alimak cut timeframes in Turkey

The Mashattan project in Istanbul is using 10 Liebherr tower cranes and 10 Alimak hoists to meet its vertical construction targets.

As with many major cities across the world the trend for residential towers is increasing and Istanbul is no exception.

The Mashattan residential tower project is using 10 Liebherr 132 EC-H tower cranes and 10 Alimak CH20/30 DOL hoists to help Turkish contractor, Tasyapi, beat its 36-month completion date.

The project comprises 10 towers and is currently thought to be Istanbul's tallest residential development. And there are at least five further projects in the pipeline for Tasyapi, including the 200m-high Mecidiyekoy tower.

Work began on the project in September 2005 with Tasyapi taking delivery of four purpose-ordered Liebherr 156 HC cranes from local dealer Atilla Dural.

The 10 cranes feature a 156m underhook height and a 55m jib length with a maximum lifting capacity of eight tonnes. A 1.7-tonne lifting capacity is possible at the maximum jib radius.

All models feature a 48.8m free-standing height before being tied to the structures at 25m intervals.

Atilla Dural also supplied Tasyapi with its first Alimak hoists. With a 2,000kg capacity and a car size of 3m (l) x 1.4m (w) x 2.13m (h), the CH20/30 DOL operates at a speed of 38m/min, allowing room for materials and up to 20 passengers.

In praising the Liebherr and Alimak equipment, Cevdet Evgar, project manager, Tasyapi, acknowledged that the mild winter had also contributed to the anticipated early completion date.

Initially the contractor prepared a 20m-deep anchored retaining wall around three sides of the hill-top location. Most of the site is on hard load-bearing bedrock allowing seven of the 10 towers to each sit on 150cm deep concrete foundation slabs.

The Mashattan project covers an area of 160,000m² with each of the 10 towers housing a ground floor footprint of 1,300m². This reduces to 900m² at the 25th floor to provide a 400m² terrace and again to 500m² at the 30th floor.

Each 140m-high tower includes 33 floors plus a ground floor/mezzanine and between three and seven basements.
