IT services giant secures seven-year Qatar project

One of the world's largest IT services and outsourcing firms has landed a multi-year technology project in Qatar.

EDS - which employs more than 117,000 people around the globe and made sales of US$21 billion last year - will provide an array of IT services to Qatar Foundation, a private non-profit organisation that oversees education, science and community development projects.

The agreement will see US-listed EDS operate the first tier-four data centre outside North America and provide IT services to the Qatar Foundation.

EDS is contracted by Qatar Foundation to supply end-to-end technology services and fully integrated IT managed services comprising IT operations, infrastructure management and service delivery.

"We are delighted to engage with Qatar Foundation as our anchor client in Qatar for the supply of world class IT services to the Foundation and the State of Qatar," commented Charles Cox, regional VP for EDS Middle East and Africa.

"By harnessing EDS' worldwide experience of IT best practice, EDS is committed to supporting Qatar Foundation's vision to improve the quality of life and provide excellent educational opportunities to the people of Qatar and the region," added Cox.

EDS claims its strategy in the region is to invest in local talent and provide knowledge transfer of its global methodologies, processes and tools to create strong indigenous IT services capabilities within each country.

EDS and its affiliates in Bahrain, Qatar and the UAE employ close to 700 staff in the Gulf. The company has a diverse customer base spanning the government, energy, transport and healthcare sectors, which it claims makes it the largest outsourcing operation in the Middle East.

EDS Gulf States was established 12 years ago in Bahrain and since then other offices have opened in Saudi Arabia and the UAE.

Two years ago, EDS and Mubadala Development Company entered into a joint venture and formed Injazat Data Systems. Injazat provides IT outsourcing services to the UAE government as well as customers in the oil and gas, financial services and telecoms sectors.

EDS made revenues of US$6.4 billion from its EMEA operations last year, a 9% rise on the previous year. However, most of that growth came from successes in North and South Europe, as well as a 10-year contract with the UK Ministry of Defence, as opposed to its efforts in the Middle East region.
