Thirteen of the world's top architectural practices have entered an international design competition to design a unique concept for the Sheikh Zayed National Museum, Abu Dhabi. The museum will be set against a backdrop of other inspirational designs in the Cultural District of Saadiyat Island with designs from Frank Gehry and Jean Nouvel amongst others.
The international competitors, who have already been briefed on the project, which will include an emphasis on environmental efficiency and sustainability are: Atelier Christian de Portzamparc; AN Tombazias & Associates; Bernard Tschumi Architects; Eisenman Architects; Dar-Al Omran; Foster & Partners; Hans Hollein Architekt; Mario Bellini Associati; M Fuksa Arch; Moriyama & Teshima Architects; Shigeru Ban Architects; Ricardo Bofill Taller and Snohetta.
The architects will submit their concept designs to a three-strong judging panel which will include Farshid Moussavi, architect and professor of Architecture at Harvard University; Peter Wilson, director of the Royal Shakespeare Company's redevelopment project and Mohsen Mostafavi, dean of Cornell University's College of Architecture, Art and Planning.
The Sheikh Zayed National Museum will cover 130,000ft² and feature five galleries devoted to UAE heritage and environment as well as an education centre, theatre, shops and a café.
