Mitsui wins $1.3bn Kuwait power deal

Japan's Mitsui & Company has won a US $1.3 billion (KD374 million) contract from Kuwait's Ministry of Electricity & Water to construct a power and desalination plant. The plant will have the capacity to produce 750MW of power and 200,000 tonnes of water a day in the city of Shuaiba North.

Subcontractor Hyundai Engineering and Construction will supply the power generation plant, while Italy's Fisia Italimpianti will supply the desalination plant.

Other Japanese companies are also investing in regional infrastructure projects. In April, Marubeni and the UK's International Power submitted the lowest bid for the $3 billion Fujairah 2 water and power project.

The Marubeni-International Power team is yet to finalise the deal to construct the plant, which will be capable of generating 2000MW of power and processing 590,000 tonnes of water per day.
