Data storage products vendor Imation is taking legal action against two resellers for selling counterfeit goods in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

The move comes after the anti-fraud department at the Ministry of Trade in Saudi Arabia carried out a raid on two stores in Riyadh, which resulted in over 98,000 fake CDs and DVDs being seized.

The Department of Prevention of Commercial Deceit in Saudi Arabia and intellectual property firm Xeno IP also worked on the case.

"We are very grateful to the authorities at the Ministry of Trade in Saudi Arabia for their co-operation and their initiative in protecting the consumers and the Imation brand name," said Riyaz Abdulla, regional manager at Imation Middle East and English-speaking East Africa (MEEA).

"We have repeatedly warned resellers that we would take strong legal action against anyone selling unauthorised and counterfeit products."

He said the firm did not have a big problem in the region with counterfeit goods, but that some resellers continued to ignore warnings.

"We have to not only protect our brand but also support our legitimate channel and our customers who rely on Imation quality," he added.

The initial raid targeted one store but was then extended to a second which yielded a further 20,000 CDs.

The vendor said it thought the fake CDs and DVDs originated from China.
