Workers strike at gas expansion project
by ArabianBusiness.com staff writer on Saturday, 21 July 2007
Several hundred workers on the Habshan Gas Complex Expansion project in Ruwais near Abu Dhabi went on strike last week.
According to a spokesperson close to the project, the workers were employed by Greek-based contractor Consolidated Contractors International Company (CCC).
The strike, which began on Monday evening continued until late Tuesday morning. The workers went on strike to demand a yearly trip home, as opposed to every two years, and an increase in salary alongside inflation.
"The problem is they're paid in dirhams, and because the value of the dirham has now dropped against the rupee, they're not making as much to send home," said the spokesperson. CCC won the contract to undertake construction and other execution support services at the HGCE project in late 2005.
The expansion calls for the installation of two sulphur recovery units with a total capacity of 1,600 tonnes a day. The client is Abu Dhabi Gas Industries.
CCC was unavailable for comment.
