Sungwon picks up Bahrain road job

by ArabianBusiness.com staff writer  on Saturday, 04 August 2007

South Korean contractor, Sungwon International, has won the US $108 million (BD41 million) contract to build a three-level interchange in Isa Town, Bahrain.

Work is expected to get underway over the next couple of months and will take around 33 months to complete.

Eleven international companies pre-qualified for the project, although only five submitted bids.

The interchange will include a flyover and an underpass on Sheikh Salman Highway.

The contract also includes landscaping and street lighting in the area.

The client is Bahrain's Ministry of Works & Housing, while the consultant is Hyder Consulting Middle East.

The project is part of the ministry's $531.91 million road spending plan to alleviate traffic at major bottlenecks.

Flyovers are also being built at Bahrain's three major junctions - Bahrain Map, Umm Al Hassam and Mina Salman.

Sungwon entered the Bahrain market earlier this year in a bid to target civil works projects and private sector projects including high rise buildings and resorts.

The move was part of the company's overall $1.2 billion investment plan in the Middle East over the next three years.

Sungwon is also building Santevill, a 24-storey residential tower in Dubai's Business Bay along with a twin-tower commercial development at Culture Village.

The company is also working on a $700 million project at Sama Dubai's The Lagoons, which is being developed on the Creek.
