India seeks industry status

by ArabianBusiness.com staff writer  on Tuesday, 07 August 2007
Subcontinent: India’s logistics industry will benefit from special status.

The Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) is planning to highlight the massive growth potential of India's logistics industry at the forthcoming ‘Logistics Summit 2007', which takes place in Chennai next month.

The national organisation is also producing a special report for the Indian government, which is expected to recommend ‘industry status' to help sustain current levels of growth for the country's logistics industry, which was valued at US$73 billion in 2006 - approximately 13% of GDP.

"The Indian logistics industry and third party logistics will witness explosive growth in the next five years on the back of boom in the manufacturing, growing domestic consumption, organised retailing and increasing external merchandise trade," commented H. R. Srinivasan, chairman, CII Logistics 2007.

"Foreign direct investment inflows in sectors such as automotive, capital goods, electronics, pharmaceuticals and telecom will lead to increased market opportunities for logistics service providers in India," he added.

Logistics Summit 2007, which takes place between 20th - 21st September, has been jointly organised by the CII and Institute of Logistics. The theme is ‘powering growth through logistics innovation and integration' and the event will focus on logistics in four sectors: agriculture, retail, construction and automotive.

"The summit will also come up with a roadmap that will provide an agenda for various stakeholders, so that the logistics industry could integrate itself with the large supply chain and become a key enabler of the Indian growth story," said Srinivasan.

Other speakers at the event include Dr Francis Rome (director of business development, Flanders Institute for Logistics), Dr Nallan Suresh (professor at New York's Buffalo University) and Sanjay Tiwari (director of sales, KLM North America).
