Industry leaders from the construction and architecture sectors explain how they see the region evolving to become a world leader in avant guarde design and build.
Abdallah Hasan Yabroudi
DCC
We have a reputation for quality: we thrive on challenges: our projects speak for themselves.
How long have you been operating? Where is the main focus for your projects and are you looking to expand your geographical focus of operations?
DCC has been established since 1962 and the main focus of our business is in Dubai and Abu Dhabi. In addition, we also have on-going contracts and development projects in Amman, Jordan and Santiago, Chile. DCC has also successfully completed a number of projects in Beirut, Baghdad and Sharjah.
DCC's strategic planning is focused on expanding its operations in the Gulf and in other Middle Eastern countries.
You have built your reputation on a guarantee of ‘quality', what benchmarks and standards do you use to consistently ensure this?
DCC has an enviable reputation for quality which is universally acknowledged by clients and consultants in the region. DCC's entire organisation is committed to the achievement of quality, which, we believe, differentiates us from many of our competitors. The benchmarks we use include our previously completed projects, which speak for themselves, and our commitment to quality management systems. DCC is proud of the fact that much of our work is repeat business from previous clients.
Where do you see yourselves and the market in 5 and 10 years?
DCC is undergoing planned expansion in accordance with its strategic planning and in response to market opportunities. In five years time, we expect to be twice our current size. During this period of expansion, DCC will ensure that its established standards are maintained and to achieve this objective expansion will take place through the on-going development of our current engineering management and administrative staff. We will also recruit additional high calibre staff where needed.
In ten years time, DCC expects to be diversified into a number of construction related areas, founded on its successful contracting and engineering background. Development activity will be expanded both independently and in strategic partnerships with key players. DCC's corporate status will inevitably change as its operations expand and, in this regard, a number of options are being considered.
What is the strategy to increase market share and brand awareness? How do you differentiate yourselves from competitors?
At this time, market share is not a concern for DCC. Opportunities and invitations to participate in high profile projects are a daily occurrence and we are being very selective about the projects we get involved with. DCC is fortunate to be working in the UAE at a time of dynamic growth. From our recent experience, the constraints that influence most contractors' and consultants' market share are not opportunities, but the availability of experienced engineering and management resources, to be able to respond to those opportunities.
DCC has no difficulty in differentiating itself from its competitors. Our reputation for quality, safety and timely completion is well-known in the industry and was established by the founder of DCC, my late father Hasan Abdallah Yabroudi, which under my leadership is being maintained by the entire DCC family.
What made you decide to expand your services into turnkey operations and service contracts?
DCC is not only a contractor, we also have a successful division that develops projects from conception to completion on behalf of, and in partnership with, respected business leaders. DCC has a proven track record in this growing area, we appoint some of the best known international consultants to design our developments. Examples of such projects include the Capricorn and Rolex Towers in Dubai, Vertex Tower and Commerce One in Amman-Jordan, the GTRE development in Abu Dhabi's flagship Al Qudra Danet development and the Rose Centre in Lebanon.
Do you have any upcoming launches/projects?
DCC has recently launched two of its prime development projects in the prestigious Abdali Development in Amman, Jordan. The first is a high quality high rise residential development and the second is a medium rise office development. DCC is excited about these landmark developments, which are going to set the future standard in Amman for quality of design and execution.
What is the most challenging part of the job?
Construction and development activity always presents challenges. DCC thrives on challenges and we have built some of the most challenging projects in the region.
All development projects are challenging and DCC never loses sight of the bigger picture. DCC understands a client's priorities. We know the drivers and criteria for a successful project, we know the market is dynamic and subject to change and, in this regard, alway strive to support our clients in the realisation of their project objectives. DCC never takes refuge in the contract. DCC is committed to the success of the overall project, not just the execution of the construction contract.
How hands-on can you be with each new and planned development?
Construction and development is a people business and DCC has some very capable and experienced engineers, project managers and administrators that form the backbone of our business. As with any successful business, strong and wise leadership is essential but this should not be over-bearing as it can frustrate initiative. Therefore a balance is required and at DCC we believe this has been successfully achieved.
Each new development starts with a detailed brief. I have hands-on involvement with the entire team at the critical stage of the development process to ensure the envisioned development and the client's objectives are realistic and that they are achieved.
We at DCC passionately believe that each development must have a robust business case, to ensure economic feasibility, plus a high standard of design and execution, to be successful. This is what differentiates DCC's developments from many of our competitors and, as I mentioned earlier, we believe our previously completed projects speak for themselves.
