ADNEC is being developed in phases, the third of which is due to be finished in August 2009.

Al Habtoor Engineering has beaten Arabtec to pick up the US $218 million (AED800 million) main construction contract for phase three of the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre (Adnec).

According to a source close to the project, the contract was awarded to Al Habtoor Engineering at the end of July.

Work on the project has started with a completion date set for the end of August 2009. The consultant on the project is RMJM and the project manager is Mace.

The contract involves the construction of a 33-storey tower comprising a hotel and office space.

In June this year, Arabtec picked up the main contract for phase two of Adnec, which is worth around $211.8 million.

The contract includes a 60,000m2 extension to the existing hall and the construction of two large car parks.

Adnec has said that the extension to the exhibition space should be ready by October next year, while the entire development, including a 2.3km-long marina and up to five hotels, will be completed in 2011.
