Chip giant Intel has set November 11 of this year as the date it will introduce its next generation, Core 2-architecture based chips (codenamed ‘Penryn').

The Penryn core is the successor to the ‘Conroe' core, which was released last year.

Intel plans to launch seven, quad-core Xeon chips, which are being designed for server and workstation use. The frequencies of these processors will range from 2GHz to 3.16GHz and each will ship with 12Mbytes of L2 (Level 2) cache memory.

According to the most recent Intel processor roadmap, consumer and mobile chips based on the Penryn core will also be released before the end of the year though Intel has not yet confirmed an actual launch date. The desktop chips will continue to use the existing LGA775 CPU socket but will likely require new motherboards offering support for a FSB (Front Side Bus) speed of 1333MHz. Penryn processors will be fabricated using a 45nm manufacturing process and will include SSE4 multimedia instructions. This smaller manufacturing process (45nm vs. Conroe's 65nm process) will boost power efficiency and will thus result in cooler running chips, according to Intel. In terms of the SSE4 instructions, Intel believes these will boost the performance of Penryn processors when dealing with multimedia tasks such as video encoding or playback.
