Saudi mobile phone retailer i2 has opened its first store in Morocco as part of its ongoing African expansion plans.

Located in Casablanca, the shop sells phones and accessories, PDAs, wireless technology, software and mobile accessories.

The launch follows the recent opening of new stores in Tunisia, Egypt and Sudan.

"We are very excited about our new store in Morocco, which fits well into i2's corporate plan of increasing its presence in the African region," said Abdul Hameed Al Sunaid, CEO at i2. "Morocco is an important market because of the growing investment opportunities, availability of skilled human resources, and vast array of facilities, particularly in the IT and telecommunication fields."

He added that i2 planned for the Casablanca outlet to be the first of a series of outlets in Morocco.

The retailer, which currently operates 350 stores in 22 countries, said it hopes to put the infrastructure in place to enable it to tap a growing demand for mobile services in Africa.

The number of mobile subscribers in Africa is expected to grow at a compound rate of 22% per annum from 2005 to 2011, according to i2.
