Air pressure gives Bauer power on Turkish rail job

Compressed air supplied by Atlas Copco compressors is a key component in the work of specialist contractor Bauer on the 13km underground Yedikule-Kadiköy rail system, which forms part of Istanbul's Marmaray project.

The project will provide an upgrading of the commuter rail system in the Turkish capital, connecting the European and Asian sides of the city with an uninterrupted commuter rail system. It is being built to relieve serious traffic problems and improve the quality of life of the city's residents.

The entire upgraded and new railway system will be approximately 76km long with main structures and systems including the immersed tube tunnel, bored tunnels, cut-and-cover tunnels, at-grade structures, three new underground stations, 37 surface stations (renovation and upgrading), an operations control centre, yards, workshops and maintenance facilities.

Bauer is currently working on a diaphragm wall as a temporary reinforced concrete structure to allow excavation works for one of three underground stations on the Marmaray project at Uksudar. Two Atlas Copco XAS 186 compressors are supplying air power for the bentonite plant.

Prior to pouring the concrete into the trench the bentonite prevents the collapse of the open trench.

Working at a pressure of 7 bar and a free air delivery of 11.1 m³/min, both compressors agitate the bentonite in five 60m³ tanks.

When completed, the north and south diaphragm walls will be 280m long and the west and east sides will each be 35m. Work started on the project late last year in a 10-month contract.

Additional work is also being carried out by Bauer to improve the subsoil below the foundation level of the underground station with a water-cement mix injected at high pressure through a small bore hole.

This subsoil jet drilling is high pressure jet grouting supported by an Atlas Copco XRVS 476 portable air compressor working at 25 bar and a free air delivery of 27.7 m³/min.

Main contractors for the project are Japan-based Taisei Corporation and local outfit Gama Nurol.
