Shimizu wins interchange

by Angela Giuffrida on Saturday, 01 September 2007
The interchange, such as the one above, will enable free-flowing traffic across Sheikh Zayed Road.

Japan's Shimizu Corporation has been awarded a US $175 million (AED645 million) contract from the Dubai Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) for the construction of the eighth intersection on Sheikh Zayed Road.

The two-year contract includes the construction of 10 bridges to alleviate traffic bottlenecks to Jebel Ali Free Zone, Jebel Ali Airport, Jebel Ali Industrial Area and downtown Jebel Ali.

"This type of multi-bridge junction does not involve any overlapping so as to ensure smooth traffic flow in all directions," said Mattar Al Tayer, executive director, RTA.

The project also includes widening Sheikh Zayed Road from four to six lanes in each direction from The Gardens intersection to the ninth intersection at Jebel Ali Free Zone as well as all utility works related to agriculture, irrigation, sewage, lighting, and traffic/directional boards.

The project is part of the RTA's $12 billion road spending plan between now and 2015.

"This will include constructing new main roads extending 500km and nine ring roads around a number of population and traffic hubs," added Al Tayer.

"In addition, we will increase the number of lanes over Dubai Creek from 19 to 47 by 2008, and then to 100 by 2020.

"The plan also envisages constructing 95 multi-tier flyovers as well as modifying 25 existing intersections," he added.

Local contractor Dutco Balfour Beatty is currently working on the construction of Interchange 5.5 on Sheikh Zayed Road and Italian firm, Salini, has been taken on to upgrade Defence Roundabout to a full flyover-type intersection.
