Second round called for private Jeddah contract

by ArabianBusiness.com staff writer  on Tuesday, 04 September 2007
Supply to the city of Jeddah is a key challenge for the Saudi water industry.

The Saudi ministry of water and electricity has invited the second round of quotations for a private contract under its public-private partnership (PPP) programme to ease the water supply problem in Jeddah, Arab News has reported.

The contract will include the supervision of management, operation and maintenance of water and sewage systems, as well as the management and development of client services, revenue collection and reduction of leakages in networks. Development, training and rehabilitation of existing staff to upgrade performance is also set-out.

The ministry had shortlisted seven international consortiums qualified to participate in the bid from a total of 84 local and international firms that had applied. It will provide the prequalified companies with all the technical and administrative details required for the submission of international quotations in November. The negotiations and formalities of contracts are expected to be completed in January next year.

The contracts are one of a number of measures the ministry is taking to boost water supply to Jeddah. The latest desalination plant in Shuaibah will supply 194 million gallons per day (MIGD) when it is ready by the end of next year.
