Inmarsat broadens its retail coverage

by ArabianBusiness.com staff writer on Saturday, 08 September 2007
Halawi: Inmarsat has tied up with new distributors to target the mass market.

Inmarsat, a provider of satellite telephony services, is using its presence at this year's GULFCOMMS to demonstrate its handsets for the region's SMB sector.

The company's phones have traditionally been used by oil & gas, media and aid professionals working in remote areas, but the company says it is now trying to target a much broader audience.

"For the new mass market strategy, we had to tie-up with specialised partners with more mass-market penetration who can market and distribute these services," says Samer Halawi, vice president of Inmarsat in the Middle East, Africa and Asia-Pacific Region.

To achieve broader retail distribution, the company has appointed Axiom Telecom, a region-wide mobile phone retailer and distribution company.

In addition to this push into the mainstream, the company is also keen to reiterate the specialist uses to which its devices are put.

"We are participating with our channel partners in order to demonstrate to potential customers the full spectrum of our services as well as meet the companies they will be directly liaising with," explains Halawi.

Recently, Inmarsat firmed up plans to launch another satellite early next year. This means that the provider will have global coverage for all its services in the future.
