Mobile TV trial on DVB-H

by ArabianBusiness.com staff writer  on Saturday, 08 September 2007
du has been involved in Dubai Media City’s trial of mobile TV using DVB-H.

du, the Emirates' second telecomms operator, has been helping Dubai Media City with its recent trial of mobile television using DVB-H technology.

The trial involves 500 mobile users, with content provided by Dubai Media Incorporated (DMI) and Emirates Media Incorporated (EMI), amongst others.

The aim of the trial, which began in June, is to check the technical and commercial feasibility of the service and prepare the ground for its commercial rollout.

"The initial phase of the trial looks promising and the feedback on the content is positive. DVB-H is set to be one of the technologies that will define the future of media and entertainment," says Amina Al Rustamani, executive director of media, TECOM Investments.

Supporters of DBV-H technology claim that it offers a better, more lag-free TV signal than services provided through 3G, although it does require installation of new infrastructure.

R&S Emirates, Kathrein, Nokia, T-Systems, a division of Deutsche Telekom, and Rohde & Schwarz were amongst the suppliers and systems integrators involved in the current trial.

Twelve TV channels are part of this trial and include Dubai TV, Dubai Sports, Abu Dhabi TV, MBC, Al Arabiya, BBC World, ART Prime Sports, Bloomberg, Zee Arabiya, Rotana Moussica, Zee News and Star Plus.
