The Arabic-language channel, which was launched in November 2003, described the achievement as reaching "an unprecedented figure in Arab television subscriber history."

The channel, part of the Al Jazeera network, currently has many television rights to many sporting events, including domestic football league coverage for Qatar, Spain, Italy, the Netherlands, Portugal and Japan, the statement said.

The station also has television rights to important European football competitions like the English, Spanish, French and German Cup as well as exclusive regional rights for the European League Cup.

Though Al Jazeera Sport has its headquarters based at the Education City on the outskirts of capital Doha, the main Al Jazeera network which houses famous channels like Al Jazeera Arabic are based in a separate complex at the network's main headquarters.
