Qatar-based Al Jazeera Sport Channel has reached more than one million subscribers, the channel said in a statement published today.
The Arabic-language channel, which was launched in November 2003, described the achievement as reaching "an unprecedented figure in Arab television subscriber history."
"I and the entire Al Jazeera Sport Channel staff are delighted by this achievement which we have accomplished in only a few years since the Channel's launch in 2003," said Ayman Jada, the channel's managing director of the Sports Channel, in a statement.
"This is a testament to the Channel's superb content which our subscribers recognize and value."
The channel, part of the Al Jazeera network, currently has many television rights to many sporting events, including domestic football league coverage for Qatar, Spain, Italy, the Netherlands, Portugal and Japan, the statement said.
The station also has television rights to important European football competitions like the English, Spanish, French and German Cup as well as exclusive regional rights for the European League Cup.
