Latin carrier agrees MRO deal extension

by ArabianBusiness.com staff writer  on Sunday, 09 September 2007
Business partners: LAN extends maintenance deal with Lufthansa.

South American carrier LAN Airlines has signed a US$200 million contract extension to continue receiving aircraft equipment from Lufthansa Technik.

Maintenance, repair and overhaul company Lufthansa will also provide components for LAN's Airbus fleet, which includes A320s (129) and A340s (eight). The aircraft are based at airports in Santiago de Chile, Lima and Buenos Aires.

"In this future collaboration with Lufthansa Technik over component support, we are once again placing our trust in the high quality of technical services," said Cristián Leon, VP Supply at LAN Airlines.

"This will contribute significantly towards the attainment of our objective of growing our fleet while maintaining its present high reliability," he added.

This agreement is the latest business transaction between the companies, following several years of collaboration. Lufthansa previously had a ‘total component support' deal with LAN before this latest contract extension.

Stefan Mattersdorff, Lufthansa's director of sales for Latin America, said: "This contract represents a continuation and expansion of a long-established collaboration which dates back over 30 years. We will do everything in our power to continue to support it [LAN] on its ambitious growth path with our technical services."

In recent months, LAN Airlines agreed to acquire 32 Boeing 787s in addition to a further 52 passengers and cargo aircraft already on order.

The South American carrier is based at Santiago de Chile airport, providing domestic flights as well as departures to North America.

Hamburg-based Lufthansa offers maintenance and repair services to airlines across the globe.
