Kuwait asked an Arab television channel on Monday not to broadcast a controversial series because of fears that it would insult Shi'ite Muslims living in the mainly-Sunni state.
Newspapers said the series, a drama titled "Sins come at a cost", would address a type of temporary marriage common among Shi'ites.
It is being produced by a local firm and was to be shown by satellite network Middle East Broadcasting Corp (MBC) during the Muslim fasting month of Ramadan that starts this month.
Members of Sunni-ruled Kuwait's large Shi'ite minority have said it might hurt their feelings.
State news agency KUNA said Information Minister Abdullah Saud al-Muhailbi had told MBC Chairman Walid al-Brahim the production company had been referred to state prosecutors.
The minister "wished that the channel would stop the broadcast of the series", KUNA said, adding that the MBC chairman had said the channel would consider the matter and make sure it respected Kuwaiti law.
The comments came after an MBC official said unidentified people had thrown stones at MBC offices in Kuwait.
Lawmaker Musallam al-Barrak told al-Rai newspaper the show should not be aired because it might provoke sectarian conflicts, echoing worries by other politicians.
