E-services for Bahrain

by ArabianBusiness.com staff writer  on Tuesday, 11 September 2007

The Kingdom of Bahrain's eGovernment Agency is at GITEX Technology Week to unveil the strategy it developed to consolidate and deliver various online government services to the general public.

Mohammad Ali Al Qaed, CEO of eGovernment Agency comments, "We started in 2006 and finished in May 2007. In three years, we have launched 157 services on four channels."

According to the agency, all government services that previously required time consuming visits in person can now be accessed through a single portal, available to all private individuals, businesses and government employees in Bahrain.

Some of the services online include business registration, payment of utilities bills, ID card applications, vehicle registration, birth certificates and work permits.

Al Qaed adds that the portal is not the only means of accessing the e-government services. "If people don't wish to go through our website, they can access our services via mobile phone, in person, or through our call centre," Al Qaed explains.

"From the portal, to the mobile, to outdoor kiosks - the challenge is that we have to reach everybody wherever they are," he adds.

Al Qaed also revealed that other GCC countries have approached the agency for help in establishing their own eGovernment initiatives.
