Bahrain's Mena Telecom claims first on WiMax

Bahraini telco operator Mena Telecom has announced it will begin rollout of its Motorola-powered WiMax network by the end of 2007.

The operator said it will deploy the network, which will be based on 802.16e technology, in two stages. In the first phase, scheduled for completion by January 2008, services will be made available from Manama to the Seef Area.

Coverage will then be extended across the Kingdom in the second phase, slated for completion by March 2008.

The operator claims the timeframe will give it the first nationwide deployment in the Middle East.

"Bahrain has a long and distinguished history of being an early adopter when it comes to the introduction of innovative and leading-edge telecommunications technology. We are excited about carrying on this tradition of telecommunications advancement through our WiMax network and being one of the first countries in the world to provide such a service nationwide," Abdulhakeem Al Khayyat, chairman of Mena Telecom, said.

WiMax is a telecommunications technology providing wireless data over long distances.

Other regional operators deploying WiMax networks include Mena Telecom rival Zain Bahrain, formerly known as MTC-Vodafone, which last week announced it had awarded a WiMax network contract to Intracom, and Saudi Arabia's Bayanat Al-Oula.
