Qatargas names Q-Flex LNG vessel

by Daniel Canty on Tuesday, 18 September 2007

Qatargas has named the Tembek Q-Flex LNG vessel at a landmark ceremony held at Samsung Heavy Industries ship building yard in Geoje Island, South Korea presided over by key Qatargas and OSG personnel.

Mrs Naomi Campbell, wife of Angus Campbell, the head of OSG Gas, officially named the ship, which is the fourth of 45 large LNG ships to be delivered for Qatar.

"Today is the first such ceremony in Samsung Heavy Industries for Qatar's new fleet of Q-Flex LNG vessels, and we are proud to be celebrating this achievement with OSG, SHI and all the people who have contributed so much to make this project a reality," said Al-Khulaifi.

To meet increasing demands for cleaner burning fuels the Tembek will be used to ship LNG produced by Qatargas 2 to customers in Europe. It is one of 14 ships that are being built in Korea to transport LNG production from Qatargas Trains 4 and 5.

The Q-Flex - and the even larger Q-Max are a new generation of LNG mega-ship, which take advantage of economies of scale and efficient propulsion technology to operate with energy requirements roughly 40% below that of conventional vessels.

The Tembek is owned through a joint venture between Qatar Gas Transport Company (Nakilat) and OSG, from which Qatargas will charter the vessel.

"SHI, OSG and the Qatargas teams have all worked hard to deliver this ship not only on time, but also safely. I congratulate all involved for the outstanding achievement of 1.2 million hours worked without a lost time injury to date," added Al Khulaifi.
