The American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) is working on the development of a water conservation standard.

Speaking at an ASHRAE Emirates Falcon Chapter seminar in Dubai, Association president Kent Peterson announced: "The [ASHRAE] board recently approved the title and scope of the new water conservation standard, the standard project committee is being formed and we already have a number of partners identified." The partners include the American Water Works Association, American Society of Plumbing Engineers and the US Green Building Council.

The move is being made in response to market demand and concerns over the growing pressure on worldwide resources of potable water. "It is a much needed standard as there really is not one in the market right now for water conservation in building structures. It will focus on the water consumption of buildings and their sites, plus all mechanical systems and will address industrial, commercial, institutional and residential buildings - all four of the main market areas," explained Peterson. The standard is expected to be ready for publication by 2010.
