Keppel wins US $1 billion Qatar contract

Singaporean environmental solutions and services provider Keppel Seghers has been awarded a design-build-operate contract worth about $1 billion from ASHGHAL, the Public Works Authority (PWA) in Qatar.
The contract is to design and build the largest greenfield wastewater treatment and water reuse facility in Qatar and the Middle East at Doha North, and subsequently operate and maintain it for 10 years.
"Qatar has demonstrated great foresight in ensuring sustainable development by investing in environmental infrastructure to support their economic growth," said Keppel Seghers CEO Chua Chee Wui.
The plant's peak design capacity of 439 000 m³ per day is more than triple the capacity of the next largest wastewater treatment plant in Qatar. It will serve a population of over 900 000 upon completion, which is expected to be in 2010, with the treated water to be put to irrigation purposes.
The sludge treatment plant at Doha North will be the only such plant in Qatar, receiving and treating sludge from wastewater treatment plants all over the country. The treated sludge can be used as an organic fertilizer or a supplementary green source of energy.
Keppel will offer a complete eco-friendly design for the Doha North facility, as well as advanced odour control systems to minimise its impact on the surrounding communities. The deal represents the company's second landmark contract in Qatar following the US $1.14 billion solid waste contract awarded in late 2006.
