Rail plan still on track

by ArabianBusiness.com staff writer  on Saturday, 06 October 2007

The feasibility study for a 350km national railway network within the UAE has been completed and is now waiting approval from the government, according to a source from the Ministry of Planning and Economy in Abu Dhabi.

The network is expected to link Abu Dhabi to the east coast and eventually connect with the proposed GCC-wide railway network.

In September 2005, the ministry commissioned a feasibility study to Germany's Dornier Consulting on the railway project, which would mainly be used to transport containers, dry bulk, cement, sand, rock and petrochemicals.

"The feasibility study has been done and we are now looking at financing and statistics," said the source, who wished to remain unnamed.

Horst Draudt, director, Dornier Consulting, said: "All we can do is wait and see but, as far as our job goes, we've finished the study and presented it to the ministry."

Abu Dhabi is also working on a plan for an inter-city train network and metro line under its ‘Plan Abu Dhabi 2030' Plan.
