ABH win US $1.5 bn dredging contract

Abu Dhabi Ports Company (ADPC) has awarded a US $1.5 billion (AED5.5 billion) turnkey dredging contract to a consort-ium including Archirodon Construction (Overseas), Boskalis Westminster Middle East and Hyundai Engineering and Construction Company.

The contract involves the dredging, reclamation, rock works and quay wall construction associated with the Phase 1A development of the greenfield offshore Khalifa Port. The project is set for substantial completion by late 2010.

The contract agreement will involve over 47 million m³ of dredging and reclamation, the construction of 3.2km of quay walls, 7.3km of breakwaters and revetments and a 4.6km bridge connecting the offshore port to the onshore port facilities. In addition, the contract will include the construction of a 3.5km causeway and an 800m-long berth for the use of Emirates Aluminum, which is currently constructing the largest single site smelter in the world with a capacity of 1.3 million tonnes per year.

The Khalifa Port is a multi-purpose maritime facility located 5km offshore of Taweelah.

The port will be developed in 5 stages, starting with the creation of a 260-hectare marine platform.
